Information on Proposed Radschool Reunion -1999

By Trevor Benneworth

As you have probably heard, the old School of Radio at RAAF Base Laverton was disbanded about 5 years ago. Both John Broughton and myself (we were there in 1965) have talked about getting a re-union of old "Radschoolers" underway while there is still time, and while the base is still there. In fact, the base is now unrecognisable from what we remember - they have even changed its name - and the "meat-box" has long gone.

We would like to get together all the blokes (including instructors) who went through Laverton in the 1960's, blokes who tried to make sense of valve theory or wave guide theory or all the other theories that no one seems to need any more. Those blokes who knew the phone number of the nurse's quarters at the Royal Melbourne off pat, who'd dine out at the Pie-eteria, who used to hang out at the "White Ensign" because it was the only place open after 6.00pm, (apart from the places Johnny Mat used to know around Thornbury), the sort of blokes who'd would race back along Geelong Rd late at night much the worse for wear.

We think it would be good to get together again over a week-end, and talk of old times, (like parking in the CO's duck pond) and have a drink together in the "boozer" and tell a few lies, and see how each of us has gone since we "got out". We'd also like you to bring your wife/partner with you as we'll make it a social do.

We have written to the CO at Laverton (I'm still going to call it that) and he has given us "in principal" approval to hold the re-union on the base some-time late in 1999, and depending on the numbers, we could possibly be bunked up and fed on base. We will have to pay our own way, and I don't know yet what the cost will be, but we'll work that out later. Might also have to set up a canvas city, as I don't think there will be enough dongas, but we'll look at that a bit later too.
* all depends on who salutes when we run up the flag.

If you're interested, I ask that you do a couple of things.

1. Send me a letter telling me the following:-
2. As we've lost touch with a lot of blokes over the years, we ask that you make a copy of this and sent it to as many blokes as you know who went through Laverton.

3. Include three 45 cent stamps in your letter to me to cover postage costs from here on in.

If you like, you can reply via E-mail to
radschool@yahoo.com - that'll save on stamps. I'll start a data base of names, and will get back to everyone who contacts me late in October this year with numbers. We should know by then whether there's any interest in this or not.

Looking forward to meeting you all

Trevor Benneworth
